Jon Connolly is the President of Sussex County Community College. He is also a research biologist with a Forest Science degree and extensive knowledge of tree anatomy and physiology. He shared this expertise on a walk through the forest with participants in a Dendrology and Tree Biology workshop sponsored by the Friends of NJSOC. Participants learned to identify common trees of Stokes State Forest by observing bark, leaf shape and texture, branch structure, and buds. There was a lively discussion about non-native, invasive plants and many opportunities to learn about damage from fungus, insects, and humans. Speaking as the Lorax, Jon passionately urged participants to be good stewards of the trees in our own backyards, leaving us not only with new knowledge, but practical ways to apply it.

Jon will lead a second workshop at NJSOC on Monday, June 14th. Spaces are still available for Nutrients and Energy in Ecosystems. Registration is required.
