About the Friends of the New Jersey School of Conservation
The Friends of the New Jersey School of Conservation (FONJSOC) unites people from all walks of life whose lives have been influenced through participation in programs at the School of Conservation. Our members are teachers, university professors, researchers, former students, environmental educators, former campers and counselors, and friends representing more than half a century of New Jersey School of Conservation (NJSOC) experiences. The Friends provide financial support for preservation, restoration and other projects to ensure the NJSOC remains a destination where the citizens of New Jersey, and the world, can learn to become better stewards of our natural resources.
Located on a 240-acre tract of land in Stokes State Forest in Sussex County, New Jersey, the NJSOC is our nation’s oldest and largest environmental education center. NJSOC has a long and celebrated history, beginning in 1949 when officials from the Department of Higher Education, college presidents, the Department of Conservation and Economic Development, politicians, and conservationists worked together to realize the promise of a world-class outdoor education center in an abandoned CCC camp. It played a key role in the development of the environmental education movement, and has served as a model for environmental centers throughout the world. The SOC’s resident programs and summer camps have served more than 400,000 students, teachers, masters and doctoral candidates, faculty and visiting professionals from every walk of life through the nearly 40,000 workshops and environmental education programs offered at the SOC over its 73-year history.
Job Description
FONJSOC is seeking a maintenance worker to join a small group of maintenance workers at the remote facility to help with maintaining its 240-acre site, including the maintenance of grounds and numerous buildings and other structures.
Under direction of a supervisor, the maintenance worker will perform varied simple and moderately physically strenuous tasks involved in cleaning and maintaining offices, furniture, buildings, and grounds. The maintenance worker may also assist in making minor repairs to buildings or equipment. The maintenance worker will undertake other related duties as required.
Primary duties and responsibilities
- Assist carpenters, electricians, painters, plumbers, and other maintenance workers and contractors by carrying tools and materials, by placing and removing ladders, by cleaning up after work has been done, and by doing other varied tasks of a simple nature.
- Clean rooms, offices, cafeterias, cottages, other living quarters, halls, laboratories and restrooms, including toilets, showers, sinks, and floors. This may include dusting, cleaning, and polishing furniture, fixtures, woodwork, and equipment. This may also include washing and cleaning windows, sweeping, washing, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors, and sweeping and vacuuming rugs. This may also include mopping and scraping sticky or heavy liquids from floors.
- Make minor repairs to the heating, electrical, and other systems in a variety of buildings and restrooms.
- Provide landscape maintenance, including cutting grass, trimming hedges, using a chainsaw, processing firewood, raking and burning leaves and refuse, trimming driveway and sidewalk edges using spades and hoes, shoveling snow and spreading sand or salt on icy surfaces to prevent slipping.
- Aid in trash collection and removal, including emptying wastebaskets, garbage cans, and recycling receptacles.
- Run and maintain power cleaning equipment, including cleaning and oiling the equipment, and changing brushes and accessories.
- Move and control moderately heavy materials, supplies and equipment, carry and set up ladders and scaffolding, and work from ladders and scaffolds.
- Engage in various administrative and training activities, keep records and files, and learn to utilize various types of electronic devices and/or manual recording and information systems used by NJSOC. The maintenance worker will be treated as and expected in all ways to be part of the overall staff at NJSOC.

This is a full time position.
